Virginia Supportive Housing and VHDA win National Housing Award

Richmond – Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH), the statewide non-profit organization that serves homeless adults by providing permanent, supportive housing, recently received a national housing award recognizing outstanding achievement from the National Council of State Housing Agencies in partnership with the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA), the state’s housing finance agency.

Nonprofit Group Provides Homes to the Homeless

But the 60 single adults who live in Heron’s Landing, one of four such residences in Hampton Roads provided by the non-profit Virginia Supportive Housing, share a common bond: they have all known the despair of being homeless.

Solutions to homelessness require regional efforts

On any given day in the Richmond Region, there are between 700 and 1,000 people who are homeless, according to the January and July 2013 Point In Time (PIT) Counts of individuals experiencing homelessness.

Of that number, about 80 percent are single adults without children and about 10 percent are literally living on the streets, in camps, under bridges, in vehicles and on park benches. These “unsheltered” individuals are the most vulnerable, the ones most likely to die if they remain on the streets.
